Nowhere compares with hunting England's highest moors! Huge skies and empty vistas, as the cry of hounds assaults your every sense. Few boundaries, jumps, gates or roads.... think emerald green mires, twinkling granite, tumbling rivers, purple heather, yellow gorse...
specialist huntersFew horses can cope with the challenges of hunting the two moors' rough terrain; their vast open spaces, and sudden appearances of lambs and foals popping out from behind rocks. You will be twinned with impeccably mannered and turned out, fit, safe, agile, quality hunters who are perfectly at home with the worst that the moorland weather can throw at them! You will need to be experienced and competent with a very secure seat to stay put! |
authenticBuilt as a fishing lodge, luxurious Wydemeet is the highest rated and most remote accommodation available on high Dartmoor. Buried in the heart of the moor, Wydemeet is central to all four Dartmoor hunts, and will be your exclusive home during your stay. Wydemeet has been the family home of Mary, your hostess, for 25 years. She's hunted across the moor throughout that time and is part of the local fabric, holding an annual meet for the Dartmoor. She will anticipate your every need, making sure you enjoy a break that only dreams are made of, in total comfort, as you become thoroughly immersed in all that comprises Dartmoor hunting life. For our 'Hunt the Two Moors' experience, your Exmoor accommodation is equally remote, exclusive, luxurious, friendly and authentic! |
Trail huntingTrail hunting was designed to replicate traditional fox hunting, which was banned in the UK by the Hunting Act in 2004. For those on horses, the days still follow a similar pattern as they did before. People still wear their traditional hunting kit, they follow a nominated “field master” who keeps them in touch with the hounds and enables them to see the hounds searching for and following their trail. Staghunting has taken place on Exmoor for over a thousand years. With the support of the farmers and landowners of the moor, the Devon and Somerset Staghounds have continued to meet 3 times a week to manage the deer on their behalf, operating within the restrictions imposed by the act. Meets are at 11am, and the season covers October to April. |
